Occidental College is a private, co-educational liberal arts college located in the Eagle Rock, Los Angeles, California, United States. Founded in 1887 by clergy and members of the Presbyterian Church, it is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges on the West Coast. Occidental College is often referred to as "Oxy" for short.
Occidental College is the oldest liberal arts college in Los Angeles. In 2014, U.S. News and World Report ranked Occidental as No. 44 on the list of National Liberal Arts Colleges. The New York Times ranked Occidental No. 20 on its list of the most economically diverse U.S. colleges and universities. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching selected Occidental as a "community engagement institution". The college was named to the 2014 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll "with distinction".
Occidental College was founded on April 20, 1887, by a group of Presbyterian clergy, missionaries, and laymen, including James George Bell, Lyman Stewart, and Thomas Bard. The cornerstone of the school's first building was laid in September 1887 in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles. The college's first term began a year later with 27 male and 13 female students, and tuition of $50 a year.
Henry John Deutschendorf, Jr. (December 31, 1943 – October 12, 1997), known professionally as John Denver, was an American singer-songwriter, actor, activist and humanitarian, whose greatest commercial success was as a solo singer, starting in the 1970s. He was one of the most popular acoustic artists of the decade and one of its best-selling artists. By 1974, he was firmly established as America's best-selling performer, and AllMusic has described Denver as "among the most beloved entertainers of his era". After traveling and living in numerous locations while growing up in his military family, Denver began his music career in folk music groups in the late 1960s. Throughout his life, Denver recorded and released approximately 300 songs, about 200 of which he composed, with total sales of over 33 million.
He recorded and performed primarily with an acoustic guitar and sang about his joy in nature, his enthusiasm for music, and his relationship trials. Denver's music appeared on a variety of charts, including country and western, the Billboard Hot 100, and adult contemporary, in all earning him twelve gold and four platinum albums with his signature songs "Take Me Home, Country Roads", "Annie's Song", "Rocky Mountain High", "Thank God I'm a Country Boy", and "Sunshine on My Shoulders".
Punta Cana is part of the Punta Cana-Bávaro-Veron-Macao municipal district, in the municipality of Higüey, in La Altagracia Province, the easternmost province of the Dominican Republic. The area has beaches and balnearios which face both the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, and it has been a popular tourist destination since the 1970s.
The Punta Cana area has an estimated population of 100,000, with an annual growth rate of 6%. To the north, it borders the village and beach of Cabeza de Toro, and the Bávaro and El Cortecito beaches. The nearest city, the 500-year-old Higüey, is 45 kilometres (28 mi) away, which takes about an hour to reach by car. European entrepreneurs, particularly Spanish hotel chains, own all but two of the over 50 megaresorts at the Punta Cana tourism destination.
The province’s 100-kilometre (62 mi) coastline tends to be mildly windy. The ocean waters are mainly shallows, with several natural marine pools in which visitors can bathe without danger. From north to south, the main beaches are Uvero Alto, Macao, Arena Gorda, Bávaro, El Cortecito, Las Corales and Cabeza de Toro, all north of the cape; and Cabo Engaño, Punta Cana and Juanillo south of the cape.

Peoples of Occidental is an observational documentary, utilizing footage shot on the campus of Occidental College that engages various members and groups of the community as they go about their daily routines. The original sound accompanied with the footage has been replaced with imposed narrations and music drawn from several ethnographic films, added in post-production. The film aims to bring attention to the implications of ethnographic films, specifically the role of the narrator, and ultimately the act of representation through film itself. Growing up in public schools, my partner and I often learned about different cultures around the world by watching ethnographic films. Turning the camera on our own, present community and adding the typical, all knowing, white, male narration from...

So this was a family trip / birthday celebration with a couple of friends from Canada. Since I'm meticulous about how I choose a resort, reviewed this one carefully online and chose this for the price and the layout of the hotel. The layout is super-important to me because if laid out correctly, the resort is more conducive to social gatherings and meeting people. We stayed for eight days. Our flight arrived quite late in the night, past midnight. Check-in was quick, and we were given an awesome room, in the middle between the two wings, on the third floor (there are only four floors anyway), with an awesome ocean view. And yes, I did pay a bit extra for the ocean view when booking, which was totally worth it since this hotel didn't charge much more for it on Expedia (I think less than $2...

Northridge head coach Marcelo Leonardi discusses the Matadors' wins over CSU Bakersfield and Occidental on Saturday, Feb. 19.
The faculty council at Occidental College is considering instituting a system for students to report microaggressions perpetrated against them by faculty members or other students. Reason TV visited Occidental's campus to find out what exactly constitutes a microaggression. One Columbia psychology professor defined the term this way: Microaggressions are the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership. After exploring the limitations of a microaggression reporting system, we discussed broader free speech issues with the students in the wake of a month of campus protests that resulted in...

For maverick entrepreneur Ian Cox, Africa is the last frontier of free enterprise. The former small-time hustler has been busting his ass on the continent for years, selling and moving merchandise. In 2012 he nabbed a lucrative United Nations contract to transport equipment from South Africa to South Sudan, a country on many countries' embargo list. The other problem: the journey north entails passing through countless checkpoints and dealing with bribe-happy officials and their nonsensical paperwork and regulations. Photographer and filmmaker Tim Freccia followed around Ian and the guys he hired for this job. "Cowboy Capitalists" documents their attempts to navigate the continent's dangerous roads and bureaucratic chaos. Watch our other documentary about truckers in Africa, West African...

Duration: 49'15" Melvyn Bragg and Ballard discuss his experiences as a medical student (encouraging everyone to spend some time studying anatomy), through to his discovery of science fiction. Ballard talks about the influence of the Surrealist painters on his early novels, which all dealt with natural catastrophe (The Drowned World, The Crystal World, The Drought) and the death of his wife and the effect this had on his fiction. They talk also about Crash, Ballard's most controversial novel, which inspired one publisher's reader to write "This author is beyond psychiatric help. Do not publish" - which Ballard took as a huge compliment! Ballard in turn talks about the obsessions that have distinguished his fiction since he first started writing, the nature of his "cautionary tales" and...
